Just open: Percy Plunkett

Penrith just keeps ramping up its food game. The outer western suburb is awash with restaurant and wine bar start-ups, and has more gourmet burger joints than Las Vegas. It is also raising the design bar, with Matt Woods crafting the interior at Percy Plunkett, which has just flung open its doors.  The designer has mixed original and new elements for the heritage  property. “The clients let me go to town on the design,” Woods says.

“We named it after Percy Plunkett, who used to live here. We just loved the name,” says owner Phillip Hallani. Penrith-raised, Hallani’s family owns food businesses in the area. “We’ve kept it really local. From the fittings Matt used in the design to the staff and the produce … I’m a proud Penrith boy and it’s really moving ahead.

The suburb is really busy.” Percy Plunket has kicked off as a breakfast and lunchtime spot, Hallani recommending its beetroot salad and gnocchi dishes. Once they settle in, they’ll also do dinner.
